Therapy Putty Exercises

You’ve got your therapy putty—what now? Creating an effective workout routine and strengthening plan is as important as choosing the right putty. Here are a few of the exercises I’ve seen produce the best results in my patients.

Grab & Grip

Step 1: Grab your putty.

Step 2: Squeeze it!

Tip: Mold the putty into a different shape each time to vary your hand workout.

Finger Scissors

Step 1: Roll your therapy putty into a ball.

Step 2: Squeeze it between your index and middle fingers.

Tip: If holding the putty in the air is too difficult, perform the same exercise with the putty resting on a flat surface.

Donut Maker

Step 1: Wrap your putty around two fingers.

Step 2: Spread your fingers to stretch the putty.

Tip: Experiment with different finger combinations to test the strength and dexterity of all your fingers.

Flat Pinch

Step 1: Roll your putty into a ball.

Step 2: Use all four fingers to flatten the putty against your thumb.

Tip: Don’t forget to switch hands. Even if you’re rehabilitating one hand, work the other one, too.

Perform these exercises regularly and for high repetitions to increase your finger and hand strength. Of course, talk to your doctor before implementing any new rehabilitation or exercise program to make sure it fits into your treatment program.

How to Use Therapy Putty

Whenever I give therapy putty to a patient, they always have a few questions. Here are the most common.

  • How often should I exercise with therapy putty?

I’ve seen the greatest success from patients who exercised consistently, repeating exercises many times over the course of their workouts. Set a regular schedule and stick with it.

  • Can my kids or grandkids use therapy putty?

Absolutely! Let your little ones play around with your putty while you’re exercising. What’s better than spending quality time with your loved ones and becoming healthier. Many children can reap the benefits of therapy putty for their own health, but regardless, it’s tons of fun. Just be sure they play safely.

  • Is therapy putty better than a grip ball?

Grip balls, or stress balls, are great tools for improving grip strength. But they’re not nearly as versatile as therapy putty. Personally, I would always go with putty. You can still perform the simple squeeze and release exercise you’d do with a grip ball—and you have access to a whole range of exercises to improve finger strength and dexterity.

  • Is therapy putty good to travel with?

Alongside personal medications a quality medical alert bracelet, therapy putty is an indispensable addition to any portable health pack. Keep it tucked away for the next time you have a spare moment, and sneak in a quick workout.

Have Fun and Improve Hand Strength with Therapy Putty!

Putty is not just for kids. If you’ve recently had surgery, are recovering from an injury, want to relieve stress, or need to improve your grip strength, therapy putty is an amazing choice. It’s easy to use and you’ll never get tired of it. I’ve seen therapy putty’s amazing benefits over the years, and I have no doubt that if you use it consistently, you’ll notice the difference. Don’t forget to discuss any changes to your treatment regimen with your doctor. Then pick out some therapy putty and get to squeezing, molding, twisting, pulling, stretching, and whatever else you can think of!
